This is an English language version of the original Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei. While the core gameplay and story remain the same, this version provides accessibility to a wider audience.  The translation effort was likely undertaken to bring this unique RPG to players outside of Japan. It was still ultimately developed and published by Atlus.
