Xenogears is a role-playing game developed and published by Square for the PlayStation in 1998. The game is known for its complex narrative, exploring themes of metaphysics, religion, and existentialism. It features a unique battle system blending real-time and turn-based elements, with the ability to customize mechs called Gears.  Its ambitious scope and mature themes set it apart from other JRPGs of its era.  The game's story is divided across two discs, each adding significantly to the overall plot.  Its development was overseen by Tetsuya Takahashi, who later went on to create the Xenosaga series.
