Dark Castle, released on the Sega Genesis in the USA and Europe, is a side-scrolling action game featuring gothic horror elements. The game puts players in the role of a knight venturing through a dark castle, battling monsters and solving puzzles.  It's well known for its memorable atmosphere and challenging gameplay.  The game balances action sequences with puzzle-solving, which is rare for many action games.  The title shows the shift toward more mature themes in action games of the time, though it is generally not thought of as a groundbreaking title in the genre.
